Trusting the God Who Sees
1 SAMUEL 9 | 1 SAMEUL 10 | PSALM 2 | EPHESIANS 1: 15-23
“The LORD has chosen him to rule His people.”
—1 Samuel 10:24
Saul didn’t seem like much.
Sure, he was tall and handsome. Scripture says no one in Israel looked like him. But even with stature, Saul didn’t carry confidence. When we first meet him, he’s wandering around trying to find lost donkeys. Nothing heroic. Nothing noble. Just a man on a frustrating errand.
But God had bigger plans.
Through a series of divine appointments, Saul meets the prophet Samuel. And without striving or chasing it down, Saul is anointed king of Israel.
But Saul doesn’t believe it.
When Samuel calls the nation together to announce their first king, Saul is nowhere to be found.
Hiding from the call.
Hiding from the weight of being chosen.
Hiding, even after being anointed.
And honestly? I get it.
Have you ever felt like God was calling you to something, but insecurity screamed louder than obedience?
Maybe you’ve sensed a stirring in your spirit, a nudge toward something new or bold or costly. But you feel small. Ill-equipped. Like someone else would be better at carrying that kind of mantle.
That’s exactly where Saul was.
And still, God chose him.
God anointed him.
God equipped him.
Even Saul’s name being called by lot (when he was nowhere to be found) shows us a powerful truth: What God appoints, He never misplaces.
Psalm 2 reminds us that God is the One who installs kings and sets His Son as ruler over the nations. Earthly kings and systems may shake, but God remains on the throne. He’s not threatened by weakness, and He’s not confused by our doubts.
And in Ephesians 1, Paul prays that our hearts would be enlightened to know the hope we have in Christ. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in us.
That same power called Saul.
That same power calls you.
So maybe today, you’re not chasing donkeys, but you are chasing purpose.
Or maybe you’re hiding behind fear, comparison, shame, or distraction.
Wherever you are, here’s the truth:
God sees.
God calls.
And God equips.
Reflection Prompts
Are you hiding from something God has already called you to?
What fears or insecurities are keeping you from walking in obedience?
How can you rest in the truth that God’s calling comes with His power?
Lord,
You see all that I am. My weaknesses, my worries, my wandering heart.
Help me to step out of hiding and into Your calling.
Give me the eyes of faith to trust that You equip who You call.
Let my life be a reflection of Your power and grace.
Amen.
